About João

The person behind the systems.

I grew up in Cuiabá, moved to Vancouver in 2015, and now run operations for an Amazon lodge from another continent. The thread through it all is attention: to people, rhythm, and the systems that help both work.

Roots

Cuiabá is inland, hot, and a long way from anywhere with a coastline. I moved to Vancouver in 2015 and became a Canadian citizen. The two places have almost nothing in common, and I stopped trying to choose between them a while ago.

Curiosity

Long before any of this was a job, I was taking things apart to see how they worked. In Brazil that turned into 3D printing, and into a first company built around it. The habit never really changed: find the thing that takes longer than it should, and check whether it has to.

Music

Music came from my family — my father, my grandmother. Nobody sat me down and taught it. I went looking for theory, scales, and harmony on my own, which is how I've gone looking for most things since. I play guitar, piano, and mandolin, I sing, and there are recordings out there from bands I've been part of.

Luau Brazuka

Luau Brazuka started in 2019 as a few friends with guitars at English Bay on Thursday evenings. It wasn't meant to be anything. It became something anyway — a Brazilian cultural community in Vancouver, and bands that exist because people met there. It's still going.

The thread

People ask how the music and the operations work fit together. The honest answer is that they’re the same attention. A warehouse has a rhythm. So does a team, and so does a week of work. Most of what I do is noticing where that rhythm breaks — and whether it needs to.
